Nos jeunes sont plus dépressifs que jamais
Taux préoccupant de symptômes d’anxiété et de dépression chez les jeunes du secondaire
Selon un article de UdeM Nouvelles du 7 juillet 2022 de Martin LaSalle
Selon des données recueillies durant la pandémie de COVID-19 auprès d’élèves de cinq écoles secondaires de Montréal, les adolescents et adolescentes rapportent des manifestations préoccupantes d’anxiété de performance, d’anxiété généralisée, d’anxiété sociale et de dépression.
Par contre, l’anxiété liée à la COVID-19 semble moins présente: parmi les 432 élèves de troisième et de quatrième secondaire qui ont répondu à un questionnaire au cours des années 2020 et 2021, seulement 6 % affirmaient être très anxieux par rapport à la pandémie, tandis que 19 % disaient être moyennement anxieux.
C’est ce qui ressort des travaux de recherche effectués par la doctorante Gabrielle Yale-Soulière, au Département de psychologie de l’Université de Montréal, sous la direction de la professeure Lyse Turgeon.
Cependant, l’anxiété quant à la COVID-19 est associée de façon modérée à des symptômes plus prononcés de dépression, d’anxiété généralisée et d’anxiété sociale. On observe par ailleurs une relation plus faible entre l’anxiété liée à la COVID-19 et le rendement scolaire, selon la doctorante Emmanuelle Ayotte, qui a aussi contribué à cette étude.
Symptômes d’anxiété généralisée, d’anxiété sociale et de dépression
Dans cette étude, 37 % des élèves sondés rapportaient des symptômes prononcés d’anxiété généralisée, tandis que 46 % en éprouvaient des symptômes modérés.
L’anxiété généralisée est caractérisée par des inquiétudes difficiles à calmer et elle s’accompagne de plusieurs symptômes tels que la difficulté à se concentrer, la fatigue, la tension musculaire et les troubles du sommeil.
Par ailleurs, 32 % des jeunes interrogés affirmaient ressentir une grande anxiété sociale et pour une proportion identique cette anxiété était modérée.
Un élève sur deux (52 %) disait souffrir de symptômes de dépression; ces symptômes étaient élevés pour 26 % d’entre eux et modérés pour les autres.
Enfin, l’anxiété de performance associée au rendement scolaire était ressentie de façon marquée par 15 % des jeunes et modérément par 18 % des répondants.
«Nos résultats indiquent aussi que les problèmes décrits plus haut sont environ deux fois plus fréquents chez les filles que chez les garçons. Par ailleurs, les manifestations sont les plus vives chez les élèves qui ne s’identifient à aucun genre», précise Gabrielle Yale-Soulière.
L’anxiété liée à la performance scolaire: un phénomène peu documenté
Les résultats préliminaires de cette étude s’inscrivent dans un projet de recherche plus large mené par Gabrielle Yale-Soulière et supervisé par Lyse Turgeon. Ce projet s’intéresse à l’anxiété liée à la performance scolaire chez les élèves du secondaire. Il est parmi les premiers à en examiner les enjeux au Québec.
«Nous souhaitions recenser les outils pouvant contribuer à réduire l’anxiété de performance en milieu scolaire et nous nous sommes aperçues que ce phénomène est très peu documenté; nous avons donc orienté notre étude dans ce sens», souligne Gabrielle Yale-Soulière.
Les embûches ont toutefois été nombreuses. En effet, les vagues de COVID-19 qui se sont succédé ont contraint l’équipe à effectuer le recrutement des participants à distance.
«Nous voulions initialement sonder 2000 élèves, mais la pandémie a eu pour effet de surcharger de travail nos partenaires dans les cinq écoles, témoigne la doctorante. Ensuite, l’obtention à distance du consentement des 581 parents concernés n’a pas été chose facile.»
